Teacher Feature - December 2016

This month's Teacher Feature is Mrs. Gena Ray. Mrs. Ray is the choral and theatre teacher at Mount Airy High School as well as the Arts Coordinator for the district. She took a moment to answer some questions for us. Check out what she had to say!

What is your educational background? I attended Peach County High School and Georgia College. I have earned my Bachelor of Music Education degree, TSS (Teacher Support Specialist) Orff Certification Level 1, Kodaly Certification, and I am Kindermusik certified.

Where do you teach? What grade level(s) and subject area(s)? I work at Mount Airy High School and teach 9-12 Beginning Theatre, Intermediate Theatre, Proficient Theatre, Advanced Theatre, Music Appreciation, Honors Music Appreciation, Chorus, Concert Choir, and AP Music Theory. I also sponsor Tri-M Music Honor Society and Drama Club. Additionally, I am the Arts Coordinator for Mount Airy City Schools.

How many years have you been in education? I have been in education 32 years.

How many years have you worked in another career? I was the choir director at First Methodist Church in Gray, George for five years. I was also the choir director at First Presbyterian Church in Pilot Mountain.

Tells us about your family. I have been married to Terry Ray for 34 years. We have three daughters Emily (31), Abby (26), Rachel (19), and a grandson Max (2). Our family moved to NC in 2005. We love NC and enjoy family adventures traveling around North Carolina and beyond.

What is your favorite part of the year and why? Christmas time is always a special time for Music and Theatre teachers but I love the Spring time the best. Spring is very busy. We have so many performances. I love seeing my students on stage performing in the school musical, plays, Pops Concert, and the annual talent show.

Finish this statement: I teach because... I can't imagine anything more rewarding than seeing my students reach their goals and share it with the audience.

Ask your class or group of students to describe you using 3 adjectives. Caring, funny, talented
