Standardized Test Information

PreACT
The PreACT is administered to all students in the fall of their 10th grade year. This test is free, and helps prepare students for the ACT.
 
ACT
The ACT is a standardized college entrance exam consisting of four sections (English, Reading, Math, and Science) and an optional Writing section.  Students who take the ACT will receive a score from 1-36 on each of the four main sections, as well as a Composite score, which is an average of the English, Reading, Math, and Science sections.
 
How to Register: All high school students in North Carolina take the ACT for free during the Spring of their Junior year.  Students who wish to test before this date, or re-test after this date must register at www.act.org.
 
Cost: All juniors have the opportunity to take the ACT for free in the spring semester.  
Otherwise, the ACT costs $60 without writing and $85 with writing.

PSAT
The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) measures what students are learning in school, helps determine whether they are on track, and opens doors for opportunities to prepare and pay for college. 
 
How to Register: MAHS offers the PSAT each October for 10th and 11th grade students, as well as 9th grade AIG students. It is optional, and students can sign up in the Bear CAVE.
 
Cost: $18
 
SAT
The SAT is a standardized college entrance exam consisting of two sections (Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Math) and an optional Writing section.  Students who take the SAT will receive a score from 200-800 on each of the main sections, and a separate score on the writing section. Students also receive a Composite score, which is an average of the Reading and Math.
 
How to Register: Students who wish to test must register at https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat.
 
Cost: $55
