Howlett Recognized with The NCTSA Influence Award

He was presented with the NCTSA Influence Award 2025 in memory of Dr. Richard E. Peterson. The NCTSA Influence Award allows North Carolina TSA members and alumni to recognize former and/or present advisors who impacted their career choices and/or perspectives on life and education.

When asked about this nomination and award, Howlett noted, “I was surprised and deeply honored. As a teacher, you always hope what you're doing is making a difference, though it's rare to witness the impact firsthand. Having a former student reach out like this truly warms my heart. We work in a profession that faces considerable negativity these days, so it's profoundly meaningful to see the positive influence we can have. I don't feel deserving of this recognition, as I know this person would have succeeded regardless, their own awesomeness carried them to where they are today.”

The nominator shared that Mr. Howlett played a significant role in their decision to pursue engineering as their career choice. Howlett has vast knowledge that he shares with students, encouraging problem-based learning through courses and clubs. Mr. Howlett earned his Associates in Arts from Surry Community College. He then went on to Appalachian State University (ASU) where he earned three Bachelor of Science Degrees. He holds a BS in Building Science with a Concentration in Architectural Technology and Design, BS in Technology Education Trade and Industry, and BS in Technology Education for Secondary Education.

He began his career in education in 2014 when he accepted a teaching position at Mount Airy High School. During his time teaching at MAHS, he has taught business courses, STEAM courses, and served as advisor for the Technology Student Association (TSA). While teaching, he earned his National Board Certification and Masters is School Administration from Appalachian State University. He currently serves as the Career Development Coordinator at Mount Airy Middle School and mentors.

Career and Technical Education Director Krystal Tyndall shared, “Garrett Howlett’s impact on our schools and community is nothing short of extraordinary. His unwavering commitment to students, his passion for learning, and his ability to inspire future leaders in technology and engineering are a testament to his character and dedication. From the classroom to the clubs he leads, Mr. Howlett has created a legacy of encouragement, innovation, and hope. His recent recognition with the NCTSA Influence Award reflects what we see every day — a humble educator who changes lives not by seeking praise, but by pouring his heart into his work and believing in the limitless potential of every student.”
